New York is in lockdown, as the state has quickly become the epicenter for the coronavirus in the United States and this video reveals just how empty the streets of ‘The City That Never Sleeps’ have become.
This video was filmed by the ShiftingLanes channel on YouTube and from within a Hyundai Veloster N. To call it eerie would be an understatement.
There are currently 21,689 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in New York and of those, 13,119 are in New York City itself. Anyone who’s ever been downtown will know that its streets are often packed and the sidewalks are teeming with locals and tourists. You’ll often find yourself rubbing shoulders with strangers in popular parts of the city, quite different to the ‘social distancing’ practices being implemented around the world.
This video takes us through some of the most popular sites through New York City, kicking off with Times Square, one of the city’s most crowded areas but one that’s now almost completely abandoned with the exception of a few pedestrians, some television media cars, police cars, and a handful of taxis. All the shops are closed but the massive billboards and screens continue to show commercials and promote products, even though no one is actually seeing them.
Other sites visited in this clip include the area around One World Trade Center, the 9/11 Memorial, Columbus Circle and Central Park, and the Lincoln Tunnel. Appropriately, the driver decides to give the Veloster N some throttle in the near-empty Lincoln Tunnel. We can’t blame him.
