New Lexus GX Overland Concept Is The Perfect SUV To Take You Off-Grid

Based on the 2020 Lexus GX 460 Executive Package, this luxurious explorer packs many off-road upgrades.

Lexus has unveiled a new off-road concept based on the GX at the Montreal Auto Show in Canada (January 17-26).

Following in the footsteps of the GXOR Concept revealed last summer in the United States, the Lexus GX Overland Concept showcases the body-on-frame SUV’s suitability as a vehicle for exploring the great Canadian outdoors.

Based on a 2020 GX 460 Executive Package production model, the GX Overland Concept is fitted with unique off-road wheels and Toyo Open Country tires, as well as a custom suspension with more travel. These features give it improved all-terrain capability but in the event the going gets tough, the GX Overland can rely on a unique front winch bumper as well as full underbody and side body armor.

The concept also comes equipped with a quick deploying rooftop tent with bed, a large awning and a shower cube so that remote exploration can be done in comfort. Speaking of comfort, the interior is more luxurious than you’d expect on an overlanding vehicle.

It features red leather, aluminum and wood trim, rear-seat entertainment, a 17-speaker Mark&Levinson premium surround sound system, and much more. After all, Lexus says the GX Overland Concept embodies the idea of “luxurious camping.”

Helping it move around in the wilderness is a 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 gasoline engine producing 301 HP and 329 lb-ft (446 Nm) of torque. The V8 is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC).

Advanced off-road tech includes the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, Panoramic View Monitor with driver and passenger camera (including underfloor view) and Multi-Terrain Select with 5-Stage Crawl Control.

Lexus Canada did not say if the equipment showcased on the GX Overland Concept will become available to the public.
